Social Media Intern
The story started
About Janet Lerato Experience!
When I first joined Pearl Lemon as a remote Social Media Intern on June 17th, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. As a final-year BCom General student, I had a solid academic foundation in business and marketing principles, but I was eager to gain real-world experience, the kind that challenges you, teaches you, and helps you grow both professionally and personally. Looking back now, this internship has been exactly that and so much more. It has been a journey of discovery, learning, and transformation.
From the very beginning, I was excited yet slightly nervous. The digital marketing space is fast-paced and constantly evolving, and even though I had studied aspects of marketing, actually applying those concepts to real client projects felt like stepping into a completely new world.
During my onboarding, I quickly learned that Pearl Lemon values independence, initiative, and creativity. I was encouraged to take ownership of my work from the start, which was both empowering and motivating. My primary role involved managing one client’s social media account, creating daily engagement content and writing captions that resonated with the brand’s tone and message.
Each day brought something new, from crafting the right message for a post, analyzing engagement levels, to ensuring the content calendar stayed up to date. At first, I was worried about keeping up, but I soon realized that Pearl Lemon’s culture is all about learning through doing and growing through challenges.
Within a few weeks, I started developing a routine. I would check the Google Sheets content calendar daily, track scheduled posts, plan captions, and brainstorm new engagement ideas. This structured approach helped me improve my time management and organizational skills, which are crucial in social media management.
One of the projects I’m most proud of was when I worked on a content strategy plan for a client who didn’t have a clear posting direction. This task required me to step back and think critically about the brand’s goals, audience, and voice. I conducted research, looked at competitors, and analyzed which types of content performed best in their industry. This was a big challenge for me at the time, but also an incredible learning opportunity.
By the end of that project, I had created a detailed content plan that the client could use as a roadmap for future posts. Seeing my ideas turn into something actionable made me realize how far I’d come in such a short period.
This internship taught me lessons that no classroom could have. I learned the importance of consistency, strategy, and authenticity in marketing. I began to understand that social media isn’t just about posting content, it’s about connecting with an audience, building trust, and representing a brand’s personality online.
Through tools like Postbridge, I developed technical skills in post scheduling and learned how to manage multiple timelines efficiently. Working with Google Sheets daily helped me improve my attention to detail, especially when tracking deadlines and analyzing patterns. Using Canva to assist with visuals also helped me understand the creative side of marketing, how design and messaging work together to create impact.
But beyond the technical aspects, the most valuable lessons were about communication, teamwork, and adaptability. Working remotely taught me to be proactive in reaching out, asking questions, and giving updates. It also reminded me that success in a professional setting often comes down to collaboration and willingness to learn.
Of course, my journey wasn’t without its challenges. There were moments when I felt unsure of my work, especially in the beginning. Sometimes I’d second-guess a caption I wrote or wonder if a post truly captured the client’s tone. At other times, I struggled with managing deadlines across different tasks.
However, what made these challenges easier to overcome was the incredible support system around me. My manager was always patient and encouraging. Whenever I faced difficulties, they guided me step by step, not by giving me all the answers, but by helping me think through the problem. That approach taught me how to find solutions independently and gave me the confidence to trust my judgment.
My colleagues were just as supportive. Even though we worked remotely, there was always a sense of connection and teamwork. They were quick to share advice, resources, and encouragement whenever I needed help. I never felt isolated or lost; instead, I felt like part of a team that genuinely cared about my growth and success.
This sense of community made a huge difference. It reminded me that even in a virtual workspace, collaboration and kindness can make all the difference.
It’s hard to put into words just how much I’ve learned in these few months. Professionally, I’ve gained hands-on experience in:
– Managing social media accounts and scheduling posts.
– Writing engaging and brand-aligned captions.
– Creating and following structured content calendars.
– Analyzing engagement patterns and audience behavior.
– Developing content strategies based on client goals.
I’ve also strengthened my soft skills, skills that are essential in any career. I’ve learned how to communicate clearly, manage time effectively, and handle feedback constructively. I’ve learned to take initiative and to balance creativity with strategy.
On a personal level, this internship helped me grow more confident in my abilities. I learned that it’s okay not to know everything at first. What matters most is being willing to learn, ask questions, and improve continuously.
One of the things that truly stood out to me about Pearl Lemon is the company culture. It’s not just about getting work done, it’s about growth, learning, and support.
My manager played a huge role in my development. They provided regular feedback, recognized my progress, and encouraged me to take on new challenges. When I made mistakes (which, naturally, happens when you’re learning), they approached them as opportunities to grow rather than failures. That kind of leadership made me feel comfortable taking initiative and pushing myself outside my comfort zone.
My colleagues also made a lasting impression on me. Everyone was approachable, kind, and willing to lend a hand. Whether it was helping me brainstorm ideas for a campaign, clarifying deadlines, or simply checking in, their support made a big difference. Working with such a collaborative and motivated team taught me the value of teamwork and communication in achieving shared goals.
When I reflect on my journey with Pearl Lemon, what stands out most is how much I’ve grown. Not just as a marketing professional, but as a person. I’ve learned that hard work, curiosity, and a willingness to learn can open doors to incredible opportunities.
I’ve also learned that success doesn’t come from perfection, but from progress. From showing up, learning from feedback, and improving every day.
This internship has given me practical skills, confidence, and clarity about the kind of work I want to pursue in the future. It has shown me how dynamic and rewarding the marketing field can be, and it has inspired me to keep learning and evolving.
As I approach the end of my internship, I feel proud of how far I’ve come. I’m leaving this experience with not just a stronger resume, but with real skills, valuable insights, and lasting connections.
Pearl Lemon has given me the space to grow, experiment, and learn at my own pace and that has made all the difference.
To my manager and colleagues, thank you for being so patient, kind, and encouraging. You made my experience not only educational but truly enjoyable. I’m deeply grateful for every challenge, every project, and every lesson learned along the way.
This internship has reaffirmed my passion for marketing and given me the confidence to keep dreaming big. I’m excited to take everything I’ve learned here and apply it to the next chapter of my journey.
Thank you, Pearl Lemon, for believing in me, guiding me, and helping me grow. This has been more than just an internship. It has been a truly transformative experience.
